How to get your Shopify store into ChatGPT shopping
Shoppers in the U.S. can now ask ChatGPT things like "best waterproof hiking boots under $150" and get back a list of products with images, prices and links. If you run a Shopify store, you're closer to showing up than most merchants. Here's what's already done for you, and what still decides whether your products make the list.
What OpenAI actually says about Shopify stores
OpenAI's merchant page is the primary source here, and it says three important things (as of October 2026):
- Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. If you sell through Shopify, no application or extra setup is required. Everyone else applies and joins a waitlist.
- Shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the U.S., with plans to expand to more regions.
- Checkout happens on your site. OpenAI is moving away from a standalone in-chat "Instant Checkout" and sends shoppers to the merchant's own site or app, with no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.
OpenAI also says the program is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), and that richer, more complete product data "helps your products surface with more accurate information when shoppers compare options." That last line is the whole game.
"Integrated" doesn't mean "recommended"
Being in the catalog makes you eligible. It doesn't put you at the top of an answer. When a shopper asks a question, ChatGPT has to decide which products actually fit: the right size, the right price, in stock, well reviewed, from a brand it can identify. If your listing is missing those details, the AI has less reason to pick you over a competitor whose listing spells them out.
ChatGPT can also read your website directly. OpenAI's FAQ notes that a feed isn't strictly required if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but feeds give you more control. So two things matter at once: the data Shopify shares and what OpenAI's crawler can read on your pages.
Step-by-step checklist for Shopify merchants
1. Make sure OpenAI's crawlers aren't blocked
Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User or GPTBot under a Disallow: / rule. Shopify's default robots.txt does not block them, but some themes, apps and agencies add AI-blocking rules. OAI-SearchBot is the one tied to ChatGPT's search results. Our guide to robots.txt and AI crawlers explains each bot and how to edit Shopify's robots.txt.liquid template.
Also check your firewall or bot-protection app. Some "block bad bots" settings turn away legitimate AI crawlers too.
2. Fill in barcodes (GTIN / UPC / EAN)
In Shopify admin, open a product, scroll to a variant, and fill in the Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) field. Barcodes let AI systems match your product to the same item listed elsewhere, to reviews, and to specific searches. This is one of the most commonly missing fields we see. Read why GTINs matter and what to do if you make your own products.
3. Write descriptions that answer shopper questions
People ask AI assistants detailed questions: "Is this safe for sensitive skin?", "Will this fit a 15-inch laptop?", "Is it machine washable?" The AI can only answer from information that exists. A two-line description gives it nothing to work with. For each product, cover:
- What it is and who it's for
- Materials, dimensions, weight, sizes and fit
- Use cases and what it's not for
- Care instructions, compatibility, what's in the box
4. Set product type, vendor and clean titles
Use the Product type and Vendor fields, and pick a standard Product category in Shopify's taxonomy. Keep titles descriptive and plain: "Men's Merino Wool Crew Sock, Cushioned" beats "The Cloud ☁️". Put the brand in the Vendor field, not just in the title.
5. Check your theme outputs Product structured data
Most current Shopify themes output Product JSON-LD automatically, but older, custom and headless storefronts often don't, or leave out brand, availability or barcodes. Run a free scan with ProductSeen or Google's Rich Results Test on a product URL. If it's missing, our Product schema guide has copy-paste JSON-LD for Shopify Liquid.
6. Show reviews in a machine-readable way
"Best rated" is one of the most common ways people shop. If you use a review app, check that it outputs aggregateRating in your product schema (many review apps have a setting for this). Only mark up genuine reviews collected from customers.
7. Keep price and stock accurate
OpenAI emphasizes current pricing and availability. Avoid products that show "in stock" when they aren't, stale sale prices, or variants with $0 prices. AI assistants are less likely to recommend something they can't confirm is available.
8. Add useful policy and brand information
Make shipping times, return policy and contact details easy to find in plain HTML. Add Organization schema to your homepage. Shoppers ask AI "does this brand have free returns?", and the answer has to come from somewhere.
Headless Shopify stores: extra checks
If your storefront is built with Hydrogen, Next.js or another headless setup, your Shopify catalog is still integrated, but your website may not be readable. Make sure product pages are server-rendered (product text is in the raw HTML, not only loaded by JavaScript), that you output Product JSON-LD yourself, and that you serve a robots.txt and sitemap from the storefront domain.
How to measure progress
There's no ChatGPT "rank tracker" you can fully trust, because answers vary by person and change often. Practical options:
- Scan your store before and after changes with ProductSeen to confirm the technical gaps are closed.
- Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask and note whether your products appear. Repeat monthly.
- Watch referral traffic from
chatgpt.comin Shopify Analytics or Google Analytics.

Do I need to apply to OpenAI if I'm on Shopify?
According to OpenAI's merchant page, no. It says that if you sell through Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already integrated and no additional setup or application is required.
Can shoppers buy my products inside ChatGPT?
OpenAI says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience. Shoppers discover and compare products in ChatGPT, and purchases are completed on the merchant's own website or app.
Does OpenAI charge fees on ChatGPT shopping sales?
OpenAI's merchant page states there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.
Can I guarantee my products will be recommended?
No. Nobody outside OpenAI controls which products ChatGPT shows. You can only make sure your product data is complete, accurate and readable, which removes the most common reasons a product gets skipped.
