GTINs and why AI shopping agents need them
When a shopper asks an AI assistant to compare two blenders, the AI needs to know exactly which blender each listing is. Product names vary. Images vary. A barcode doesn't. That's why the humble GTIN is one of the most valuable fields in your product data.
The alphabet soup, decoded
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| GTIN | Global Trade Item Number, the umbrella term for product barcodes issued through GS1. |
| UPC (GTIN-12) | The 12-digit barcode common in the U.S. and Canada. |
| EAN (GTIN-13) | The 13-digit barcode common in Europe and much of the world. |
| GTIN-14 | Used for cases and multipacks. |
| ISBN | Book identifiers, which are part of the GTIN system. |
| MPN | Manufacturer Part Number, assigned by the brand. Not globally unique on its own, but useful together with the brand name. |
| SKU | Your internal stock code. Unique in your store only. |
Why AI shopping agents use GTINs
- Matching. The same product can be sold by dozens of stores under different titles. A GTIN tells a system these listings are the same item, so it can merge reviews, specs and prices.
- Comparison. "Where is this cheapest?" and "Is this the 2026 model?" are only answerable if the system knows the exact product.
- Trust. A valid identifier connected to a brand is a signal the listing is real and accurate.
- Feeds. Product feed specifications, including Google Merchant Center's, ask for GTINs where a product has one. OpenAI's merchant program accepts product feeds too, and richer data, in OpenAI's words, helps products "surface with more accurate information when shoppers compare options."
None of this guarantees placement. But a product with a valid GTIN gives an AI system far less to guess about than one without.
Do you need to buy GTINs?
- You resell other brands: no. Use the barcode already on the packaging.
- You make your own products and sell them in retail or on marketplaces: usually yes. License them from GS1 US (or your country's GS1 office). Pricing depends on how many numbers you need, so check GS1's current pricing page.
- Handmade, custom or one-off items: often not required. Use brand + MPN + SKU, and mark the product as having no GTIN where a platform asks.
How to add barcodes in Shopify
- Go to Products and open a product.
- Click a variant (or scroll to Inventory on a single-variant product).
- Enter the code in Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) and save.
- For many products, use bulk edit (select products > Edit products > add the Barcode column) or export/import a CSV with the
Variant Barcodecolumn filled.
Then confirm your theme outputs it in Product schema. Our Product schema guide includes Liquid that maps the Barcode field to gtin.
WooCommerce, BigCommerce and others
Recent WooCommerce versions include a GTIN/UPC/EAN/ISBN field on products; older setups use an SEO or feed plugin field. BigCommerce has UPC/EAN and MPN fields on each product and variant. Whatever your platform, the goal is the same: the code is stored on the variant and printed in your structured data and feeds.
Common mistakes
- Putting the same GTIN on every variant. Each size and color that's a separate product needs its own.
- Entering your SKU in the barcode field. If it isn't a GS1 number, don't label it as a GTIN; use
mpnorsku. - Dropping leading zeros when editing CSVs in a spreadsheet. Format the column as text.
- Invented numbers. Every GTIN has a check digit, and fake ones are easy to detect.

Scan my store freeFrequently asked questions
Can I make up my own barcode numbers?
No. A GTIN is only valid if it was issued through GS1 (or is the manufacturer's existing code). Made-up numbers can collide with real products and get listings disapproved on platforms that verify them.
I resell other brands. Whose GTIN do I use?
Use the manufacturer's GTIN printed on the product packaging. Don't buy new barcodes for products that already have one.
I make handmade or custom products. Do I need GTINs?
Not always. Products without a manufacturer barcode can be identified with brand plus MPN (your own part number) and SKU. Many feed specifications allow this. If you sell through retailers or marketplaces that require barcodes, get them from GS1.
Are cheap barcode resellers OK?
GS1 is the official issuer. Resold numbers may be registered to another company in GS1's database, and some marketplaces reject them. Check the requirements of every channel you sell on before buying.
